THE CATHEDRAL OF SAN GERLANDO

The Cathedral of San Gerlando is one of the oldest Cathedrals in Sicily, built between 1093 and 1099 A.D. Composite and combined, it is one of the most architecturally complex and singular examples of the region, the result of renovations, restorations and enhancements that have continued constantly over its nearly one thousand years of history.

Therefore it currently represents a spectacular synthesis of styles, concepts and identity of Sicilian art, in a continuous transformation that has more added than replaced, revealing itself nowadays in all its progressive path: the first part of the building, recalling the fourteenth-century and fifteenth-century style – exemplified by the extraordinary wooden trussed ceiling – is followed by the triumphal arch in sandstone blocks of the fifteenth seventeenth century and the coffered roof of Spanish origin, up to the sumptuous baroque apse and a refined example of trompe-l’oeil. The experience in the Cathedral is particularly varied and wide-ranged, offering details and peculiarities around every corner: from the San Gerlando’s relics to the domes of the Madonna delle Grazie, passing through the glass urn containing the embalmed body of San Felice Marte: according to an ancient legend he’s the mythical figure of Brandimarte, brave champion of Charlemagne, whose deeds are narrated in the The Frenzy of Orlando by Ludovico Ariosto.

The Cathedral houses a collection of Greek and Roman sarcophagi. Among them stands a wonderful sarcophagus of the third century AD narrating the Greek myth of Hippolytus and Phaedra and of which Goethe, in his “Journey to Sicily”, said: “I think I have never seen anything more superb in terms of bas-reliefs”. Since its last complete reopening, in 2019, the Cathedral has hosted thousands of faithful and tourists from all over the world, returning to represent one of the most evocative destinations in Sicily.
